Hyemin Park, a Culture and Design Management major at Yonsei University, came to PSCORE with the beginnings of an interest in education. Half a year later, she leaves with clearer direction, surprising memories, and honest advice for anyone thinking about volunteering with children.

Hyemin first heard about the tutoring opportunity at PSCORE from her friend who was interested in the organization’s internship program. When her friend mentioned a chance to work with North Korean defector families, Hyemin jumped at the opportunity. She had long been searching for an important cause to dedicate her free time to, and the fact that she could do so while exploring her interest in teaching young children made it seem like the perfect fit.

Over the course of her time working with PSCORE, Hyemin tutored three students: two sisters and their younger brother, who joined the group just a few weeks before the end of the term.

The work was not always easy. When the students struggled with the original English lesson material, she switched to different workbooks to build up their phonics skills from the basics. By continuously monitoring and making changes to adapt to the students’ needs, she was able to provide stronger, more personalized lessons. In addition, the younger students often needed gentle reminders to focus, especially due to the digital format. But Hyemin found the work enjoyable, and felt herself energized by the seemingly unlimited energy of the three siblings.

Hyemin recalled with a laugh the many instances of the eldest sister interrupting her with insightful if surprising questions, always keeping her on her toes. Quick to point out the exceptions to every new rule that was taught, the student continuously shocked Hyemin with how perceptive and enthusiastic she was. These moments became the most memorable part of Hyemin’s time at PSCORE, and pushed her to bring more of her own passion to the lessons as well.

This experience revealed something to Hyemin she had never before realized: she truly enjoys teaching and spending time with children. Whether or not she pursues teaching in the future, she is determined to continue working with children, at least on a volunteer basis, throughout her life.

Her advice for future tutors comes from her own apprehensions at the start of her experience. Before her first session, she was quite nervous. Without having any prior interactions with someone from North Korea, she worried that her own assumptions or stereotypes might affect her. That uncertainty, however, disappeared almost instantly. “From the first session I realized that all children are the same, around the world. There is nothing to be worried about.”

She ended her interview by encouraging new tutors to make time for small talk. She credits her ability to build a real connection with her students as the key to her success in teaching. Becoming closer to students helps them relax and feel comfortable. From there, she says, learning English becomes easier for everyone.
