1. Could you briefly introduce yourself and tell us how you became involved with PSCORE?

My name is Yuri, and I'm a Korean-American. I was born in Korea but I've lived most of my life in the U.S. I heard about PSCORE from a friend who was also living in Korea, and I became very interested in volunteering as a tutor. Currently I am preparing for a career as a tax attorney.

2. What did a typical tutoring session look like, and how did you make your lessons interesting and comfortable for your student?

Typically we started off with a grammar lesson, then we practiced with some example sentences and exercises like fill-in-the-blank questions. Then we looked at movie lines or lyrics containing the grammar forms we reviewed that lesson, so that they could hear those grammar forms in context. Then we'd watch the scene or the music video together. After asking my students about their preferences, they informed me that it was more helpful to review the lines before watching the scene rather than after, so from that point on I structured all of our lessons this way. I always tried to tie the grammar lessons to real-world examples in music and movies, because I believe that language learning is much more interesting when you can see how it connects to culture and real communication.

3. Can you share a moment when you noticed your student becoming more confident or engaged?

The students had a lot of fun during our last lesson, where we played a Jeopardy game. They were on the edge of their seat as they pondered their final answer, and excited when they got a question right. It was really nice to see them gain confidence as they answered questions correctly and to see them genuinely have fun.

4. What has been the most memorable or meaningful part of tutoring so far?

There were many meaningful moments for me, including our Jeopardy game, but one moment that stays with me is when I showed the students a clip of Whitney Houston singing "I Will Always Love You" to teach the future tense. This was their first introduction to Whitney Houston. When Whitney hit the iconic high note of the song, one of my students smiled wide with awe and excitement. It was amazing to see.

5. What have you learned from your student or from this tutoring experience?

I was definitely able to learn how to present on different topics in an engaging way. But most importantly, this experience showed me how fulfilling it is to instill interest in a language and culture. Education is essential, and it's important that we have educators who know how to instill passion and curiosity in students.

6. What advice would you like to share with someone thinking about becoming a tutor for PSCORE?

I'd like to encourage tutors to make their content as engaging and interactive as possible, rather than just lecturing. The trial-and-error process of having the students answer questions and solve problems was very effective in their learning process. Plus, the students could be tired from school, so it's nice to throw in fun facts, movie scenes, and funny example sentences to keep the students engaged. Next, tailor the lessons to their English level and their pace of learning if you can. Lastly, best of luck and have fun!

1. 간단한 자기소개와 함께 PSCORE에서 활동하게 된 계기를 말씀해 주세요.

안녕하세요, 저는 유리입니다. 한국계 미국인으로, 한국에서 태어났지만 대부분의 삶을 미국에서 보냈습니다. 한국에 거주하고 있던 친구를 통해 PSCORE에 대해 알게 되었고, 영어 튜터 봉사활동에 큰 관심을 가지게 되어 참여하게 되었습니다. 현재는 세무 변호사를 목표로 진로를 준비하고 있습니다.

2. 평소 튜터링 수업은 어떻게 진행되었나요? 학생들이 흥미를 느끼고 편안하게 참여할 수 있도록 어떤 방식으로 수업을 구성했는지도 궁금합니다.

보통 수업은 문법 설명으로 시작한 뒤, 예문과 빈칸 채우기 문제 등의 연습을 통해 배운 내용을 익히는 방식으로 진행했습니다. 이후에는 그날 배운 문법 표현이 실제로 사용된 영화 대사나 노래 가사를 함께 살펴보면서, 해당 표현이 실제 상황에서 어떻게 쓰이는지 들어볼 수 있도록 했습니다. 그다음 영화 장면이나 뮤직비디오를 함께 시청했습니다. 학생들에게 어떤 방식이 더 도움이 되는지 직접 물어본 결과, 영상을 먼저 본 뒤 대사를 복습하는 것보다 대사를 먼저 살펴보고 영상을 보는 것이 더 도움이 된다는 의견을 들었습니다. 이후에는 모든 수업을 이러한 방식으로 구성했습니다. 저는 문법을 음악이나 영화 속 실제 사례와 연결하려고 항상 노력했습니다. 언어가 문화나 실제 의사소통과 어떻게 연결되는지를 직접 볼 수 있을 때 언어 학습이 훨씬 더 흥미로워진다고 생각하기 때문입니다.

3. 학생들이 이전보다 자신감을 가지거나 수업에 더 적극적으로 참여한다고 느꼈던 순간이 있었나요?

마지막 수업에서 진행했던 Jeopardy 게임을 학생들이 정말 재미있어했습니다. 최종 답을 고민하면서 긴장하는 모습도 보였고, 정답을 맞혔을 때는 굉장히 신나 했습니다. 문제에 정답을 맞히면서 점점 자신감을 얻는 모습과, 진심으로 수업을 즐기는 모습을 볼 수 있어서 정말 좋았습니다.

4. 지금까지 튜터링을 하면서 가장 기억에 남거나 의미 있었던 순간은 무엇인가요?

Jeopardy 게임을 비롯해 의미 있는 순간들이 정말 많았지만, 특히 기억에 남는 순간이 하나 있습니다. 미래 시제를 가르치기 위해 Whitney Houston의 “I Will Always Love You” 공연 영상을 학생들에게 보여준 적이 있습니다. 학생들에게는 Whitney Houston을 처음 접하는 순간이기도 했습니다. 노래에서 Whitney Houston이 유명한 고음을 부르는 순간, 한 학생이 놀라움과 설렘이 가득한 표정으로 활짝 웃었습니다. 그 모습을 보는 것이 정말 인상 깊고 특별한 경험이었습니다.

5. 학생들과의 수업 또는 이번 튜터링 경험을 통해 무엇을 배우셨나요?

다양한 주제를 학생들에게 흥미롭게 전달하는 방법을 많이 배울 수 있었습니다. 하지만 무엇보다도 이번 경험을 통해 학생들이 새로운 언어와 문화에 관심을 가지도록 돕는 일이 얼마나 보람 있는지 느끼게 되었습니다.교육은 정말 중요하며, 학생들에게 단순히 지식을 전달하는 것을 넘어 열정과 호기심을 심어줄 수 있는 교육자가 필요하다고 생각합니다.

6. PSCORE 튜터 활동을 고민하고 있는 분들에게 해주고 싶은 조언이 있다면 말씀해 주세요.

단순히 강의하듯 수업하기보다는 최대한 흥미롭고 상호작용이 많은 수업을 만들어보시기를 추천하고 싶습니다. 학생들이 직접 질문에 답하고 문제를 풀면서 시행착오를 경험하는 과정이 학습에 매우 효과적이었습니다.또한 학생들은 학교 수업을 마치고 와서 피곤할 수도 있기 때문에, 재미있는 이야기나 영화 장면, 재미있는 예문 등을 중간중간 활용하면 학생들의 집중과 흥미를 유지하는 데 도움이 됩니다. 가능하다면 학생의 영어 수준과 학습 속도에 맞추어 수업을 구성하는 것도 중요합니다. 마지막으로, 너무 부담 갖지 말고 즐겁게 수업하시길 바랍니다. 응원합니다!
