Q: How did you become involved with PSCORE as a tutor?

My first week I was asked to join due to a need for more tutors. It was not my plan originally due to being unaware that an intern being able to tutor was possible.

Q: What does a typical tutoring session look like for you?

My class is half an hour. We begin with vocabulary and then follow with a small game to practice the vocabulary. Because it’s just half an hour, class goes by so fast.

Q: What strengths do you notice in the students you work with?

I think my students are very motivated to learn. This wasn’t the case at first, but when you create fun topics for them to learn, they really pay attention and enjoy themselves. I think their English has improved over the last couple of months. They are also nice people and very positive.

Q: Do you have a favorite memory with your students?

I like all my classes. I really like them and that’s why I continued to tutor them even after my original end date. One time we played an English mafia game, and I really enjoyed that. I also remember the first time I introduced to them a fun topic. They were really energetic about it, which I was happy about. That was the first time they were energetic whilst learning English. That was the start of making more fun topics for them to have fun with English.

Q: What do you feel has been the most rewarding about tutoring these students for you?

They are so happy after our lessons. For example, I did a presentation on jobs and occupation. After the presentation, they were fully engaged and asking me questions. We were having fun with English, and that felt so rewarding. After the lesson I thought to myself, “This is amazing. I love it.”

Q: What advice would you share with someone thinking about being a tutor for PSCORE?

Q. PSCORE 튜터로 어떻게 활동하게 되셨나요?

활동을 시작한 첫 주에 튜터가 더 필요하다는 이야기를 듣고 튜터링에 참여해 달라는 요청을 받았습니다. 처음에는 인턴도 튜터로 활동할 수 있다는 사실을 몰랐기 때문에 원래 계획에는 없던 일이었습니다.

Q. 평소 튜터링 수업은 어떻게 진행되나요?

수업은 30분 동안 진행됩니다. 먼저 영어 단어를 배운 뒤, 해당 단어를 연습할 수 있는 간단한 게임을 진행합니다. 수업 시간이 30분밖에 되지 않기 때문에 시간이 정말 빠르게 지나갑니다.

Q. 함께 수업하는 학생들에게서 어떤 강점을 발견하셨나요?

학생들은 배우고자 하는 의지가 매우 강하다고 생각합니다. 처음부터 그랬던 것은 아니지만, 학생들이 흥미를 느낄 수 있는 재미있는 주제로 수업을 구성하면 집중해서 참여하고 즐거워합니다.

지난 몇 달 동안 학생들의 영어 실력도 향상되었다고 생각합니다. 학생들은 친절하고 긍정적인 태도를 지니고 있다는 점도 큰 장점입니다.

Q. 학생들과 함께한 가장 기억에 남는 순간이 있나요?

저는 모든 수업이 좋았습니다. 학생들을 정말 좋아했기 때문에 원래 예정했던 활동 종료일이 지난 후에도 계속해서 튜터링을 진행했습니다.

한번은 학생들과 영어로 마피아 게임을 했는데 정말 재미있었습니다. 처음으로 재미있는 주제를 수업에 활용했던 순간도 기억에 남습니다. 학생들이 그 주제에 매우 활발하게 반응해 주어서 기뻤습니다.

학생들이 영어를 배우면서 그렇게 활기찬 모습을 보인 것은 그때가 처음이었습니다. 그 일을 계기로 학생들이 영어를 즐겁게 배울 수 있도록 더욱 재미있는 주제들을 수업에 활용하게 되었습니다.

Q. 학생들을 튜터링하면서 가장 보람을 느꼈던 부분은 무엇인가요?

수업이 끝난 후 학생들이 정말 행복해하는 모습을 볼 때 보람을 느낍니다. 예를 들어, 직업과 하는 일에 관한 발표 수업을 진행한 적이 있습니다. 발표가 끝난 뒤 학생들은 수업에 완전히 몰입해 여러 가지 질문을 했습니다.

학생들과 영어를 사용하며 즐거운 시간을 보낼 수 있었고, 그 점이 정말 보람차게 느껴졌습니다. 수업이 끝난 후에는 속으로 “정말 대단하다. 이 일이 너무 좋다”라고 생각했습니다.

Q. PSCORE 튜터 활동을 고민하는 사람들에게 어떤 조언을 해주고 싶나요?

학생들이 재미있게 영어를 배울 수 있도록 열정적으로 가르쳐 주셨으면 좋겠습니다. 앞으로 활동할 튜터들도 학생들이 영어로 대화하는 데 더욱 편안함을 느낄 수 있도록 재미있고 적극적인 방식으로 수업에 참여해 주기를 바랍니다.

시간이 지나면서 제 학생들이 영어를 말하는 데 큰 자신감을 얻게 되었다고 생각합니다. 학생들은 그런 자신감을 가질 자격이 있기 때문에 앞으로도 학생들이 계속 성장하는 모습을 보고 싶습니다.
