"This interview was organized and written by Perpetua Buadoo"

Q: How did you become involved with PSCORE as a tutor?

While studying in South Korea, I looked online for volunteer opportunities and came across PSCORE. I saw the opportunity to possibly become an English tutor for North Korean defectors. It sounded like a worthwhile experience, and I really wanted to participate in my community in some capacity. I ended up applying, had an interview, and got accepted.

Q: What does the typical tutoring session look like for you?

I prepare ahead of time a topic my student is interested in. Because the sessions are online, I usually create a PowerPoint presentation to teach the student the vocabulary and expressions of the week. For example, animals, places, or whatever the topic for the week is. We go over vocabulary and then we do some review activities to make sure the student understands. We also play different games. I think it is always good to incorporate games when teaching. This is to make sure the student has fun with the material as well as to solidify what the student learned during the session.

Q: What strengths do you notice in the student you work with?

It seems the student really wants to learn. The student is receptive to the lesson which I appreciate. Even when the student is tired, I can see their determination to learn. I appreciate the student’s positive attitude.

Q: Do you have a favorite memory with your student?

There is another PSCORE intern who tutors online a student that is in the same classroom as mine. Apparently, when I was enthusiastically teaching the word ‘orange,’ the other PSCORE tutor in the same classroom could hear me through their computer. It became a funny and memorable moment. During our lessons, I try to be very expressive and encouraging. I give her lots of compliments and say “Good job!” a lot. The student then becomes more energetic and engaged about the material we are learning.

Q: What do you feel has been the most rewarding about tutoring your students?

I think it’s a small way to contribute and help them on such a difficult journey. I feel like the transition process for North Korean defectors is such a difficult one—the difficulty and maybe trauma they’ve gone through. Since I’m a native English speaker, at least I can help in a really small way. That’s the part that means the most to me— in a really small way I can contribute to my student’s life and hopefully impact it in a positive way.

Q: What advice would you share to someone thinking about also becoming a PSCORE tutor?

They should definitely go for it. I think it’s definitely worthwhile and a meaningful experience, especially if you just want to get involved in your community. They can make a real contribution to an important cause while also connecting with their community.
