Introduce yourself! 자기소개 부탁드립니다!

My name is Judy, I am from Germany and have been an intern with PSCORE for 3 months, contributing to the social media team and the education team. I have graduated from a Master’s degree in International Development from the University of Vienna. 

제 이름은 주디이고, 독일출신입니다. 성통만사에서 3달째 SNS팀과 교육팀에서 인턴으로 일하고 있습니다. 비엔나 대학교에서 국제 개발 전공 석사학위를 취득하였습니다.

Did you have any experience teaching before joining the education program with PSCORE? 성통만사 교육프로그램에 참여하기 이전에 가르쳐본 경험이 있으신가요?

No, I never tutored or taught before, so before I started giving classes I was quite nervous and unsure if I could do well. But once I finished my first class, I really liked interacting with the kids and after a few classes, I loved coming back to teach them.

아니요, 과외를 해본적이 없기에 처음 수업을 진행할때에는 참 떨리고 제가 잘 해낼수 있는지 걱정 되었습니다. 하지만 첫 수업을 마치니 아이들과 소통하는게 너무 좋았고, 수업을 몇번 해보니 또 가르치는게 기대되었습니다.

Do you speak Korean? How did this affect your classes? 한국어를 할 수 있나요? 

I do speak some Korean, and since my students were very young, this helped a lot in the classes. Sometimes they could not understand the instructions in English very well, so we helped them out in Korean. Nevertheless, we tried to keep most of the class in English to make them more and more comfortable in speaking. I think especially younger kids feel more comfortable if they can rely on Korean for difficult questions, and it also helped to make them feel comfortable when talking to us before and after classes.

한국어를 조금 할 수 있습니다. 아이들이 특히 어리기에 한국어를 할 수 있는것이 도움이 많이 되었습니다. 수업중에 아이들이 영어로 이해를 잘 못할때 한국어로 도와주었습니다. 그래도 아이들이 더욱더 영어로 말하는게 익숙해지도록 최대한 영어로 수업진행을 하였습니다. 특히 조금 더 어린 아이들이 어려운 문제를 풀때 한국어를 쓰는걸 선호하고, 제가 한국어를 하기에 아이들이 수업 전 후에 저와 편하게 이야기를 할 수 있었던것 같습니다.

What does the process of tutoring look like for you? 어떤 식으로 과외 수업을 진행하시나요?

Before the classes, I prepared presentations and games for the students. Since classes were in the afternoon and the students were often tired, we tried to loosen up the mood a bit by making the lessons more playful and fun for them. We encouraged them to play games in English like bingo with new vocabulary or matching words with descriptions. After a few classes, we repeated old content to see if they remembered well. We wanted to make the experience fun but also see some progress in their learning!

수업하기전, 학생들을 위해 파워포인트와 게임을 준비합니다. 수업이 오후에 진행되다보니 학생들이 많이 피곤해 해서 분위기를 띄우기 위해 더욱더 재미있게 수업을 진행하도록 노력했습니다. 영단어로 빙고를 하거나 맞추기 게임을 하는등 영어로 게임을 하게 유도하였고, 그렇게 수업을 몇번 한 뒤 복습하여 예전에 배운것들을 잘 기억하는지 보았습니다. 이 경험이 재미있고도 학습이 잘 진행되도록 노력하였습니다!

What would you like to tell someone who wants to participate in our tutoring program? PSCORE 튜터링 프로그램에 참여하려는 사람에게 어떤 조언을 하고 싶으신가요?

Even if you are not experienced in teaching or with kids, I would encourage you to try tutoring. I think it is a great opportunity to provide some real support and create a positive learning environment for the kids. It is also rewarding to see their progress and how they warm up with each passing lesson!

가르치거나 아이들과 일하는 경험이 없으시더라도 과외를 해보는걸 추천드립니다. 아이들을 돕고 즐겁게 배울수있는 환경을 만드는데 좋은 기회라고 생각합니다. 아이들의 실력이 늘고 점점더 수업에 익숙해지는걸 볼때 뿌듯함을 느끼게됩니다.
