김은정씨는 1997년에 부모님과 함께 중국으로 탈북 했습니다. 중국에서 생활하는 것은 언어와 여러가지 문제때문에 어려운 일이었습니다. 게다가 신분이 안정되지 않았기 때문에 더 나은 교육을 받기가 불가능 했습니다. 김은정씨는 원하는 교육을 받고 꿈을 이루기 위해 국경을 넘어 대한민국에 정착하기로 마음 먹었습니다. 그리고 한국에 와서야 진정한 자유와 안정을 찾을 수 있었습니다. 


여러 어려움을 겪으며 2007년에 서울에 도착해 한국외국어대학교에 입학 했습니다. 학비는 한국 정부가 지원해 주었습니다. 꿈에 그리던 대학교의 첫번째 해를 지나는 동안, 교환학생 프로그램으로 캐나다에 다녀올 기회가 생겼습니다. 그 곳에서 많은 사람들을 만났고 여러 이야기 중에서 나중에 어떤 직업을 갖는게 좋을지에 대해서도 이야기를 나누었습니다. 대부분의 사람들이 의사, 간호사, 변호사 같이 소득이 높은 직업을 추천해 주었습니다. 

한국으로 돌아와 다시 되짚어보니, 지금 공부하고 있는 전공을 마치고서라도 다시 간호사가 되기 위한 공부를 하고 싶다는 생각이 들었습니다. 그래서 그때 전공하던 경영학에 대한 공부를 2011년에 마치고 나서 다시 간호사가 되기 위해 이화여대 간호학과에 진학 했습니다. 하지만 정부의 대학 학비 지원은 4년간만 가능하기 때문에 은정씨와 가족들은 경제적인 어려움에 맞닥뜨렸습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 간호사가 되고 싶다는 꿈을 져버리지는 못했습니다. 나중에 통일이 되면 북한에 있는 사람들을 도와줄 수 있는 길이 간호사로써 열릴 것이라고 꿈꾸고 있기 때문입니다. 미국에서 10년이 넘는 간호사 경력을 쌓고 이후에 캐나다에서 석사를 받은 다음에 통일된 한국에서 간호학을 가르치는 것이 지금 은정씨의 꿈입니다.


지금은 영어 실력을 늘려서 국제 간호자격증을 취득하는것이 목표입니다. 그 동안 영어교육을 제공해 주는 여러 단체들을 다녀 왔습니다. 어떤곳들은 종교적인 색채가 강해 종교를 강요받기도 했었습니다. 이제 김은정씨는 PSCORE의 영어수업에 참여하면서 1:1 수업을 받을 수 있게 되었습니다. 은정씨의 자원봉사 교사는 간호사로써 일해본 경험이 있는 사람이며 의료분야의 시스템을 예로 들면서 영어수업을 진행해 주고 있습니다. 은정씨는 도와주는 선생님에게 매우 감사해 하면서 수업을 진행하고 있으며 PSCORE와 함께 그녀의 꿈을 향해가는 길에 매우 안정감을 느끼고 있습니다. 



Kim Eun-Jung fled from North Korea and moved to China with her parents in 1997. They have had some difficulties fitting into society due to language barrier. Her non-citizen status also became more problematic for her because she couldn’t pursue a higher education in China. Thus, to fulfill her right of education they finally decided to fully escape, crossing the borders into South Korea in order to seek true safety and freedom. 


They arrive in Seoul in 2007, where Eun-Jung can finally attend a University and study Foreign Language and Administration with the help of the South Korean Government for her tuition. During her first year of of college, she went to Canada for student exchange program. There she met a lot of people and had some talks with them about her future jobs. Most of them recommended her to becomes a nurse, doctor, or a lawyer since it’s a high paying job. She returned to South Korea with a new set of goals in mind; She wanted to pursue medical education after she finished her current study. She finished her Foreign Language and Administration degree in 2011 and went to pursue her medical education to become a nurse at Ewha Womans’ University. However, because the government can only provide scholarship funding for four years of a defector’s tuition, Eun-Jung and her family have had some economical difficulties. Despite all of that, it never stopped her from pursuing her dream of becoming a nurse. She had dreamed to become a nurse so she can help everyone in need because she seen so many people who needed her help back in North Korea. She wants to become a nurse with 10 years of experience working in the United States before pursuing her Master degree in Canada and after the unification of Korea she wishes to becomes a professor and teach everyone how to save lives to reduce the mortality number in North Korea.


Now She wants to improve her english skills so she could have better qualifications to become a nurse for the international community. She has been to several Organizations that provides english courses. Some of them have religious background that require her to join their cult and have oppressing style of education. She finally came across PSCORE where she attended the Wednesday English Classes with a one on one method of teaching. Eun-jung have been paired up with a volunteer teacher who also have a nursing background to help her better understanding at medical terminologies. Eun-Jung was really pleased with her paired teacher and our method of teaching because she can focus more on improving her english as well as her medical education. She said that she has always felt supported by PSCORE and feels significantly more comfortable pursuing her goals as a result of the classes she has taken. She wishes to better understand wider audiences and give her best to her patients.
