How did you find out about PSCORE’s volunteering program? What inspired you to start tutoring?

A little over a year ago my college hosted an online event with a North Korean speaker. He shared his story and charged his listeners to get involved in empowering North Korean refugees. I immediately researched the organization that had sponsored the event and began looking for opportunities to tutor North Korean refugees in English. However, I was unsuccessful until one of my close friends began interning at PSCORE and let me know about the online tutoring opportunity. Of course, I took her up on it right away.

What does the process of tutoring look like for you?

Because my student and I live in completely opposite time zones, tutoring sessions are always early in the morning for me, but it is such a joy to start off my day with teaching. My student has an intermediate level of English, so our main focus is to improve conversational skills. I begin every session with basic small talk. We discuss our past week, the weather, activities we enjoy, differences between American and South Korean lifestyles, and sometimes even politics. Another large portion of our time together is spent doing listening exercises. I have found TED Talks to be a great resource for listening practice; they are filled with useful vocabulary, advanced grammar, and common English expressions.

In what way is this experience most rewarding for you?

It is so rewarding to be a part of my student’s learning process. I view it as a privilege to be involved in her story in this way. I get to see her display her knowledge, grapple with new concepts, and master tricky grammar and confusing expressions. Nothing is more rewarding than to know I can have a positive influence on her life through my teaching.

What is your favorite memory as a tutor?

There have been so many small, meaningful moments that have made this experience totally worth it for me, but one general part of tutoring that I find very special is my student’s attitude. She is older than me and has much more life experience than I do; however, she is so full of humility and cheerfulness even when she makes mistakes or struggles with a new concept. It truly inspires me to continue learning and never grow too content in my own comfort zone. I have loved teaching my student, but I have enjoyed getting to know the type of person that she is even more. It is an honor to work with her.

What makes life liveable for you? Something you find important or motivational in life?

I love hearing other people’s stories and sharing my own. I am a musician, and storytelling is central to how I approach music and performing. I am passionate about elevating others’ voices and empowering people to speak for themselves both through music and language. For this reason, I have found PSCORE’s volunteering program especially meaningful. It is so exciting to be a part of a program that works to educate and empower North Korean refugees.
