How did you find out about PSCORE’s volunteering program? What inspired you to begin tutoring?

I’m currently attending Minerva University in San Francisco, and I believe that our school really promotes trying to turn its students into global citizens and send them to different parts of the world. During my time in Seoul during my second semester, I wanted to participate in local volunteering opportunities. While searching for these opportunities, my roommate came across the PSCORE website and shared it with me. As I looked into the website, I became very fascinated by the work that PSCORE does!

What does the process of tutoring look like for you?

I tutor my students virtually once a week at around 2 AM or 5 AM in the morning for me because I had returned to the U.S. It was difficult at the beginning because I didn’t speak Korean. But fortunately, one student was very good at English, so she helped me communicate with her classmates. Sometimes after I explained something, she would try to help her friends understand through visuals. It was so cute!

I try to make lessons fun because it’s so important for them to learn to feel engaged at such a young age. It’s not necessarily the grammar structures that are going to stick with them; it’s the attitude they have towards learning different cultures that they actually take away from my lessons. So some of the things I did was teach them about me! I made English more personal to my life and tried to connect with them through our shared hobbies and interests. At the beginning of class, I always ask them about their feelings and to review what we did last class. Recently, I’ve begun showing them fun videos and songs, and it’s so cute to see them dancing on the screen and singing. I’m lucky that our classes are virtual because my college only has us stay in each city for 4 months, which is not enough to make a considerable impact. Although it has its difficulties, having virtual lessons is better for me because I’m able to teach for a longer period of time and make a greater impact on my students.

In what way is this experience most rewarding for you?

I went on an exchange program in France during high school, and I would always teach my friends about American culture and help them with their English skills. When I got back, I helped exchange students that came to the U.S. and showed them my hometown, helped them learn English, and taught them American culture. It was so rewarding to make connections with different people and be a positive influence on their lives. It’s so important to recognize and combat the problems that North Korean defectors face and the fact that there are educational inequalities, and I believe that my efforts strive to achieve these goals. And the most rewarding part is probably at the end of my lessons when I say goodbye to the students, and they’re making little Korean hearts at me and saying goodbye!

What is your favorite memory of tutoring these students?

It would definitely be having the kids come to class every week. Because I have to wake up so early in the morning to teach, I am usually so tired. However, when I see my students eagerly participating during my lessons – singing, dancing, and helping each other, I feel happy and motivated to teach. It just makes me so happy to see these interactions and the smiles on their faces.

What makes life liveable for you? Something you find important or motivational in life?

I’m so passionate about learning different cultures, traveling, and experiencing different languages and worlds. I was supposed to go to China during my gap year, but because of COVID, I had to virtually learn about Mandarin and Chinese culture. Participating in this volunteer program has also made me want to learn Korean even more, so I’m hoping that once I graduate I can go back, learn more about Korea, continue interacting with Koreans, and learn more about the culture. I want to keep an open mind, actively try to break down stereotypes and cultural barriers, and just learn about the world, teaching people about myself and my culture. Those thoughts really excite me.
