I was able to meet Yuri at one of the hospitals in Seoul, where she has been working as a physical therapist for 3 years(in 2015). She greeted her co-workers cheerfully after work.

“Ive been working as a physical therapist in the hospital and its been almost 3~4 years since I started my job. While working Im studying at the graduate school and I think I could graduate in a year. I guess this year will be tough. I should complete 2 papers and participate in many events for graduation.

She told me about her plans with a bright smile when we asked her to introduce herself. She spoke calmly,  but it was clear by looking at her just how much she has agonized about her future.

One day 10 years ago she was pushed to leave North Korea by her mother and came to South Korea, not knowing anything about what happened to her and how this would change her entire life.

At first I hated that because I was born over there that I was put in this situation. I asked my mom why she brought me here, and I talked to my dad, too.

Yuri didnt receive any academic help, she was uncertain of her future because she couldnt understand many loan words, there were days when she was teased because of her accent, and she was in a class with students two years younger than her. All of these things left a lasting impression on young Yuri.

And that was not all. In North Korea Yuri didnt have time to worry about her future  it was planned for her in advance. In South Korea Yuri was burdened with this new freedom to plan her own future.

“You know, here in South Korea if I dont try there is no one to live my life for me. So, I think that is the most stressful thing.

Suddenly Yuri had more freedom than before and she lost her sense of lifes purpose. But, her time at the Alternative School helped her to make new goals for her life.

“I studied with South Koreans until my first year of middle school, and I was very stressed because I realized that I as different from average students. At the Alternative School I spent a lot of time with students from North Korea and I realized, out of many North Koreans we safely came here and have the freedom to study anything, so we are really special human beings. So I am really thankful to so many people for coming here safely.

One day while Yuri was volunteering at the rehabilitation center there was a special meeting, and she realized her purpose in life.

One day, I went to the rehabilitation center to volunteer. As I watched a physical therapist helping the people with disabilities, I thought that job is something everyone needs and that I could work as a physical therapist and help people who really need it.

17-year-old Yuri, who wanted to be a physical therapist, finally entered the physical therapy department at her college and made the first step toward achieving her dream.

Toward her dream, Yuri took one step at a time, but she carried the label of being a North Korean defector.

“Before she began practical training someone spread the word that there would be one student from North Korea at the hospital. On the first day, a teacher said to me, 'There is a North Korean among us. I looked around and of the three of us I think it must be Jae-in.' I asked her why, and she said because she was wearing horned rimmed glasses and looked foolish. That teacher said, 'I'm certain that foolish looking country bumpkin with the horned rimmed glasses is from North Korea.' I was really hurt."

Through these experiences with others' prejudice against North Korean defectors, Yuri has put forth a lot of effort and studied harder than her peers so that this prejudice does not grow. She has continued to make new goals and put them into practice.

“I want to study more and go into education. If I get my master's degree and my certification from the academy, then after that I can have the qualifications for education. If I want to become an educator, I have to complete my master's degree and then after that I will need to keep studying. Rather than a university, I want to work somewhere where they provide education about methods for treatment, like others helped me at the academy. If I want to do that I definitely need to study English."

Yuri said that meetings with PSCORE were a big help for achieving her dream. Yuri came to PSCORE to meet with a teacher regularly for one year. There was a short break when Yuri switched jobs, but by chance her teacher moved to the same area as Yuri and they were able to meet again.

“At first I applied for tutoring at PSCORE it was for English, and even now I am taking English classes. I was really afraid of English. While I was attending college there was the stance that because English is absolutely necessary I had to take English classes, but I couldn't really manage to do that on my own. I wish that I could use PSCORE more for everyday life to keep learning English.

PSCORE is supporting North Koreans like Yuri with their studies in English and other diverse fields. PSCORE's Education Program became a source of great support for Yuri, who has been constantly striving to have more confidence than now and working towards her future.

PSCORE has a dream, like the North Koreans who come knocking on our door and have participated in our education program and everyone who has volunteered with us, that in the process of reunification a greater sense of mutual understanding can serve as its foundation.  Finally, it is our hope that North Koreans like Yuri, who have received education through our programs, will have a leadership role in a reunified Korean society.
