1. Why did you decide to start tutoring North Korean defectors?

When I was living in the United Kingdom, I previously engaged in volunteer activities at the institution where North Korean defector children and South Korean children go to for multiple times. Following that experience, I developed an interest in the lives of North Korean defectors in South Korea. I first wondered what kind of help I could provide to them, watching numerous documentaries regarding life of North Korean defectors in South Korea. Since I’m majoring in English education at the university, I started volunteering in the field of education.

2. What does the process of studying look like for you?

Because I live a bit far from the student’s place, I met her every once in a week online for an hour. To inspire student to be motivated studying English, I tried to teach her English conversation at first and as my student doesn’t go to the other private English tutorial classes for extra, I mostly teach her English grammar. Also, I try to explain concepts based on principals.

3. Is there a special activity you like to do with the students?

We analysed news articles written in English together and tried to understand those as part of the reading curriculum.

4. In what way is this experience most rewarding for you?

When my student improved a lot and made a progress in their English proficiency, I feel the most rewarded. Even though they are teenagers like middle school students or high schoolers, and considered young adults, they still respond positively to compliments. When they receive more praise, they love it and they try to study harder to receive more compliments. Witnessing their increased motivation is also incredibly rewarding.

5. What did you learn from this experience? 

 I have been teaching children for a long time despite my young age. I am currently in the process of job hunting, and even if I don’t choose a career in English education, I would like to continue volunteering in the future. I would like to help others by sharing my talents and knowledge.

Furthermore, I did not know how it looks like to live as a North Korean defector in South Korea. While I watched numerous documentaries portraying extreme and tragic situations, they often felt bit unrealistic. However, after interacting with my student who had defected from North Korea, I realised that labelling them as a ‘North Korean defector’ is not definitely necessary as they are, in essence, exactly same human being just like me.

6. What is your favourite memory of tutoring the students ? 

Obviously I would say it is a sense of accomplishment like I mentioned. When I notice that the student learns something she didn’t not know before, I feel very rewarded as a tutor.

7. What would you like to tell someone who wants to participate in our tutoring program?

I recommend you to start the tutorial with a precise and detailed curriculum and do prepare for the tutorial. At first I was embarrassed because there was not a set curriculum or a text book from the organization that I can follow. But after I realised that it was the opportunity for me to organize the tutorial freely at the same time. Also, if you speak Korean, it will help more. As these students mostly lived only in Korea or other Asian countries and different from many other Western countries, Korean society is not ethnically and culturally diverse. Due to this fact, they could be little unfamiliar with different culture. Because of this, I recommend you to practice basic Korean.

Moreover, do not talk about any topic related to politics about North and South Korea as well as the defecting process because students would get uncomfortable or even triggered. 

1.      과외를 시작하게 된 계기가 있나요?

영국에서 살던 시절,  한겨레학교라고 불리우는 탈북민아이들과, 남한아이들이 다니는 학교에서 교육봉사를 한 적이 이미 있으며 그 이후에 남한에 정착한 탈북민들의 삶에대해 관심이 많이 생겼고 그에 관한 다큐멘터리들을 많이 보다가, 제가 영어 교육 전공이다보니 내가 무엇을 도와줄 수 있을까 생각해보다가 비정부기구인 피스코어를 마주쳐서 하게 되었습니다.

2.    어떤 식으로 과외를 진행하시나요?

지역이 달라서 온라인으로 매주 일회씩 한시간 줌으로 진행합니다.
학생에게 영어에대한 흥미를 고취시켜주기 위해서 회화수업 병행했습니다. 또 학생이 다른 영어 학원을 다니지 않기 때문에 문법을 많이 가르쳐줍니다. 그리고 원리 중심으로 설명해주도록 합니다. 

3.   과외를 진행하시면서 특별한 활동 같은것이 있나요?

독해활동의 일환으로 영어 뉴스를 분석하고 이해하도록 했습니다.

4.   어떤 면에서 이 경험이 가장 바람이 있습니까? 

학생이 영어실력이 느는게 보일때마다 보람이 있습니다.

아직 학생들이 중학생, 고등학생이여도 여전히 아이들이기 때문에 칭찬을 받으면 너무 좋아합니다.  칭찬을 해줬을 때 이런 동기부여된 모습을 보고 너무 뿌듯합니다.

    5. 이 경험을 통해 어떤 것을 배웠습니까?

저는 나이에 비해 아이들을 많이 오래 가르친 편입니다. 현재 취업 준비 학년인데 앞으로 영어 교육쪽으로 진로를 결정하지 않을지라도 계속해서 이러한 봉사활동을 하고 싶은 의향이 있습니다. 저의 재능을 기부하고 싶고 배풀고 싶습니다.

또 탈북민분들의 삶이 실제로는 어떨지 몰랐습니다. 제가 봐왔던 다큐는 자극적이고 극적으로 너무 비극적인 부분들이 많았기 때문입니다. 그러나 함께 교제해보니 ‘탈북민’이라는 프레임을 끼울 필요가 없이 똑같은 사람이고 저와 같은 동일한 인격체라는 생각이 들었습니다.

6.과외를 하시면서 가장 좋았던 면이 뭡니까?

역시나 아까 언급한 바와 같이 가르치면서 느끼는 뿌듯함입니다.

학생이 전혀모르던 것을 점점 알게될때의 뿌듯함 참 큽니다.

     7.이러한 과외 프로그램에 또 참여하고픈 사람들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있다면?

대충 수업 계획 없이 얼렁뚱땅 하지 마시고 체계적으로 커리큘럼 및 학업 계획을 짜고 시작하는 것을 추천드립니다. 처음에는 커리큘럼이나 교재가 정해져있지 않아 당황스러웠으나 이것은 수업을 자유롭게 구성할 수 있는기회였습니다.  또 한국어를 어느정도 할때 도움이 됩니다.  필수적이진 않지만 한국에서 자라온 아이들의 환경 특성상 많은 다양한 문화를 접할 기회가 없기 때문에 동양의 문화와는 전혀 다른 나라의 문화를 낯설어 할 수 있습니다. 때문에 조금의 한국어라도 익히는 것을 추천드립니다.

또 정치적으로 예민한 주제, 아이들의 탈북 과정에대해 힘들고 불편해할 수 있으니 그러한 것들은 대화를 할 때 안꺼내는 것을 추천합니다.
