Hello! My name is Daniela, and I came all the way from Honduras. I am currently an intern at PSCORE to both the IT and Education Team. Thank you for inviting me to this interview!

안녕하세요! 저는 온두라스에서 온 다니엘라라고 하구요. 현재는 성통만사에서 IT팀과 교육팀 인턴으로 일하고 있습니다. 인터뷰에 초대해주셔서 감사합니다!

How did you find out about PSCORE’s tutoring program? And what interested you to volunteer? PSCORE의 튜터링 프로그램을 알게 된 경위는 어떻게 되셨나요? 그리고 왜 자원봉사에 참여하게 되었나요?

Upon being accepted for the internship at PSCORE, a former tutor and intern introduced me to the tutoring program during my orientation. Excited to contribute and dive into something new, I eagerly jumped on the opportunity to join. After the first day, I officially joined as a regular tutor—an experience that I've truly come to cherish.

성통만사 인턴십에 합격한 후, 오리엔테이션에서 전 튜터이자 인턴이었던 분께서 프로그램을 소개해주셨어요. 두 언어를 구사할 수 있는 저의 능력을 활용해볼 수 있는 기회에 흥미를 느껴 참여하게 되었어요. 새로운 경험에 도전하는 동시에 도움을 주고 싶어하는 마음으로 튜터가 되었습니다. 처음의 열정을 그대로 지켜나가면서 정규 튜터로 참여하게 되어 매우 소중한 경험이 되었어요.

Did you ever teach English to middle school students before that? Would you advise people who never experienced teaching to try doing online tutoring? Or do you think it is necessary to have some teaching experience for our program?  이전에 중학생들에게 영어를 가르쳐 본 경험이 있으신가요? 그리고 온라인 과외를 시도해보지 않은 사람들에게 어떤 조언을 하고 싶나요? 아니면 경력이 필수라고 생각하시나요? 

No, I had never experienced teaching English to middle school students before, which initially brought about a sense of uncertainty and made me hesitate. However, learning from fellow tutors and building connections with the students made the transition and the learning curve seamless! I discovered how to articulate concepts in a manner conducive to English language learners and a dynamic learning environment.

아니요, 중학생들에게 영어를 가르친 경험이 없어서 처음에는 살짝 두려운 감정이 들었지만, 다른 튜터들로부터 배우면서 학생들과 시간을 보내며 빨리 익숙해졌더라고요! 영어 학습자를 위해 개념을 효과적으로 전달하는 방법과 활기찬 학습 환경을 만드는 방법을 알게 되었죠.

Do you speak korean? If not, has your level of Korean been a barrier to teaching English or in contrast, not speaking Korean has enabled you to communicate differently and helped the students to improve their English level? 한국말 할 줄 아시나요?그렇지 않다면, 한국어를 배우지 않은 것이 영어 튜터링에 어려움이 됐거나, 반대로 한국어를 사용하지 않아 학생들의 영어 실력 향상에 도움이 되었다고 생각하시나요?

I do speak Korean. It has helped in fostering smoother communication with students, as well as connecting with students on a personal level, sharing jokes and forming bonds that transcend language barriers. However, I also believe that students can also benefit from tutors who don't speak the language. It allows them to fully immerse themselves in the target language and adds an enriching layer to the tutoring experience. Each approach brings its own set of advantages, and I've found that connecting with students goes beyond language proficiency, creating a richer tutoring experience for everyone involved.

네, 한국어를 할 수 있습니다. 언어 능력을 활용하면 학생들과의 원활한 소통이 가능하며 개념을 정확히 이해할 수 있어 좋구요. 그리고 학생들과 다양한 주제에 대해 이야기하거나 농담을 주고 받으며 언어적인 장벽을 넘어 학습을 촉진하는 데 도움이 되고 있어요! 다만, 학생들이 언어에 몰입할 수 있도록 언어를 사용하지 않는 튜터도 도움이 될 수 있다고 생각을 해요. 학생들이 목표 언어에 완전히 녹아들 수 있도록 도와주며 튜터 경험에 다양한 층을 더해줍니다.

What does the process of tutoring look like for you? 과외 수업을 어떤 식으로 진행하시나요?

When heading to the middle school, I usually go with fellow tutors. Together, we brainstorm topics and prepare games, interactive activities, or discussions tailored to the students' interests. This way, they can learn, practice English, and enjoy the class all at once. It's about making the learning experience both educational and fun!

중학교에 다른 튜터들과 같이 가거든요. 그래서 모여서 학생들이 재미있어 할 것 같은 주제, 게임, 상호 작용 활동 또는 토론을 같이 준비합니다! 학습을 교육적이고 재미있게 만드는 것이 목표이며, 학생들이 영어를 배우고 연습하면서 수업을 즐길 수 있는 방식으로 진행됩니다!

In what way is this experience most rewarding for you? 이 경험이 가장 보람 있었던 측면은 무엇인가요?

I'm just genuinely happy to contribute in any way I can. I strongly believe in leveraging our skills for positive change. Witnessing the kids learn, seeing their progress, and observing how they discover other cultures and languages is incredibly rewarding. It's a two-way street—I'm learning from them just as much as they are from me, creating a space for mutual growth and understanding.

저는 일단 작게라도 도움을 줄 수 있어서 정말 기쁩니다. 모든 사람들이 자기 지식을 활용해 긍정적인 변화를 이끌어낼 수 있다고 믿어요. 학생들이 영어를 배우고 복습하는데다가, 튜터들과 교류하면서 다른 문화를 경험하는 모습을 보는 것은 정말 보람 있어요. 이렇게 학생들이 튜터들에게서 배우는 것뿐만 아니라 튜터도 학생들로부터 배우고, 함께 성장하며 서로 이해할 수 있는 공간을 만들어 가고 있어요.

What is your favorite memory as a tutor? 가정교사로서 가장 좋아하는 추억은 무엇인가요?

For me, those genuine, light-hearted moments like how nicely the kids welcome us or the times we share laughter together stand out. And, oh, their joy when we bring snacks—it's absolutely heartwarming!

 아이들이 저희를 따뜻하게 환영해주는 순간이나 함께 웃는 자연스러운 순간들이 소중합니다. 그리고, 저희가 간식을 가져갈 때 아이들이 아주 기뻐지는 모습을 보는 것도 너무 귀엽더라고요. 정말 소중한 추억을 많이 만들 수 있었죠!

What would you like to tell someone who wants to participate in our tutoring program? 과외 프로그램에 참여하고 싶은 분들에게 전하고 싶은 말씀이 있으신가요?

For anyone looking to join our tutoring program, I suggest starting by understanding the students' interests and tailoring lessons or conversations around those topics. What truly matters is fostering a comfortable environment for them to use English and cultivating a positive attitude toward the language.

학생들이 좋아하는 주제를 알아보고 그 주제를 기반으로 수업이나 대화를 진행하는 것을 추천드릴개요! 가장 중요한 것은 학생들이 영어 사용에 편안함을 느끼고, 영어에 대한 긍정적인 태도를 기를 수 있도록 도와주는 것이라고 생각합니다.
