Introduce yourself! 

Hello! My name is Louise, I am 22 years old and I am Irish-Australian. I am currently doing an internship at PSCORE as part of my BA International Studies at Leiden University, the Netherlands.

How did you find out about PSCORE’s tutoring program? And what interested you to volunteer?

After I was accepted for the internship at PSCORE, I started following the social media pages and one day saw a post mentioning that there were openings to tutor North Korean defectors online. I applied and was soon matched with a student and we started doing weekly online classes soon after. I thought that this was a good opportunity for me to familiarize myself with PSCORE before starting my internship in a few months time. 

Did you ever teach English to middle school students before that? Would you advise people who never experienced teaching to try doing online tutoring? Or do you think it is necessary to have some teaching experience for our program?

Yes, I volunteered tutoring English at a cram school in Taiwan twice within the past few years (two months each time) before I started tutoring with PSCORE. I also have a TEFL degree and tutored online during the pandemic. 

Although experience can be very helpful (for example, knowing how to rephrase sentences to be understandable to EFL [English as a foreign language] learners), I believe that even if you lack practical teaching experience, you would be able to empathize with the student and get an idea of which techniques work better for their learning. I think that teaching requires a lot of trial and error before you are able to find out which methods work best for you and your students. Moreover, there are many free online resources, for example on YouTube, that could inspire new teachers with lesson planning and techniques to help keep the students engaged. 

Do you speak korean? If not, has your level of Korean been a barrier to teaching English or in contrast, not speaking Korean has enabled you to communicate differently and helped the students to improve their English level? 

Unfortunately I do not speak Korean. This has been both a blessing and a curse when tutoring English to Korean students. On the one hand, the student is forced to use their English to communicate and can learn new ways to express themselves without resorting to Korean. On the other hand, this language barrier between student and teacher could be a little frustrating for the student if they do not understand the questions and instructions or lack vocabulary and cannot communicate their ideas with ease. Luckily nowadays we have a lot of advanced technology at our fingertips that can help us with translations in emergencies. 

I also think it depends on the age group and their level of English. If they are older, mature and engaged in the lesson, it is easier to translate some individual words and phrases, and for the lesson to be more conversation-oriented, compared to the younger children who may not only need instructions for games and exercises to be translated into Korean, but commands like “listen up” or “sit down” when they get a little rowdy and lose focus. 

What does the process of tutoring look like for you?

For the online classes, I would always prepare a PowerPoint presentation about a topic that interested my student, for example taekwondo or jiu jitsu. Following the PPT helped keep the student engaged as I was able to ask him to read the new vocabulary and sentences instead of reading from a textbook.  

When I go to the middle school, I usually go with another tutor so on our way to the school we brainstorm topics to discuss during the session. Some topics we discussed include MBTI, countries they would like to travel to, their favorite K-pop groups, and what they did on the weekend. 

In what way is this experience most rewarding for you?

I think it’s just nice to know that kids get the experience to interact with international tutors and can discuss topics they may not have the chance to in their normal lessons. Normal English classes at school or in hagwons can be mundane and stressful, so these kinds of informal tutoring sessions can hopefully be a pleasant experience for the students. 

What is your favorite memory as a tutor?

I don’t know if I have a particular memory that stands out, but I would just say the moments where we would laugh with the children and see them make progress and use vocabulary they had just learnt makes me feel so happy. 

What would you like to tell someone who wants to participate in our tutoring program?

I would advise that you get to know the students interests in the beginning and then plan lessons or conversations around these topics.  

Also, don’t feel disheartened if the students seem disinterested. They have a busy school life and extra English tutoring may not be the most exciting activity. I also wouldn’t be too worried about how much they are learning and if you feel that the progress is slow. In my opinion, the most important thing is to help the student feel more comfortable using English and develop a positive attitude to the language.

안녕하세요 저는 Louise라고 하고 22살이구요 호주와 아일랜드에서 왔습니다. 현재 Leiden 대학교에서 국제학부 학사의 일환으로 PSCORE에서 인턴십을 하고 있습니다.

PSCORE의 자원봉사 프로그램은 어떻게 알게 되었습니까? 과외를 시작하게 된 계기가 있나요?

PSCORE 인턴십을 합격한 후에 소셜미디어 홈페이지를 팔로우하기 시작했었는데 어느날 PSCORE 게시물에 북한 탈북자에게 가즈칠 수 있는 봉사 일자리가 생겼습니다. 그래서 지원을 했고 금방 학생과 매칭이 되서 온라인으로 수업을 시작했습니다. 인턴십을 시작하기 몇달 전에 PSCORE에 대해 알아볼 수 있는 좋은 기회라고 생각했습니다. 

PSCORE 프로그램 시작하기 전에 중학생이나 초등학생에게 영어를 가르친 적이 있으시나요 ? 과의를 해본적이 없는 사람에게 온라인 수업을 해보라고 추천하시겠습니다 ? 아니면은 가르침에 있어서 경력이 필수라고 생각하시나요? 

PSCORE 과외 시작하기 전에 타이완 입시 준비 학원에서 지난 몇년에 두번이나 영어 과외를 자원했습니다. TEFL 학위도 있고 코로나 때도 온라인으로 영어를 가르쳤습니다.  

모든 경험이 도움이 될 수 있는데 (예를 들어 학생들이 이해할 수 있게 문장을 고쳐말하는 방법을 알기) 과의 경력이 부족하더라도 수업을 통해서 학생과 공감할 수 있고 여러한 방법으로 학생의 학습에 더 효과적인지 알 수 있을 것이라고 믿습니다. 시행착오를 통해 어떤 방법이 학생과 선생님에게 효과적인지 알 수 있습니다. 또한 유튜브나 온라인에 많은 자료들이 있어서 수업을 준비할 때 도움이 될 수 있고 학생들이 수업에 더 집중할 수 있습니다.

한국어를 말할 수 있나요? 그렇지 않다면, 영어를 가르침에 한국어 수준이 장애물이 되는지, 반대로 학생들이 한국어로 말 할 수 없어서 영어 실력이 늘어나는 다른 방법으로 소통할 수 있는 데 도움이 된다고 생각하시나요?  

안타깝게도 한국어를 말할 수 없습니다. 그런데 영어를 가르칠 때 축복이자 저주가 됩니다. 한편으로는 학생이 선생님하고 의사소통할 수 있게 영어로 말할 수 밖에 없어서 자신을 표현하는 새로운 방법을 배울 수 있습니다. 다른 한편으로, 학생과 선생님 간의 언어 장벽으로 학생이 질문을 이해못하거나 어회가 부족하거나 하고 싶은 말을 쉽게 표현하지 못할 때 답답할 수 있습니다. 다행히도 요즘에는 긴급한 상황에 번역을 도울 수 있는 첨단기술이 많습니다. 

또한 학생 나이나 영어 수준에 달려 있다고 생각합니다. 나이가 더 많고 성숙하며 수업 시간에 잘 집중한다면 번역 앱을 써서 단어와 문장 몇개를 번역하기, 수업에 대화 연습을 하기가 더 쉽습니다. 반면에 어린 학생들은 집중이 잘 안 되거나 소란스러울 때 게임 설명와 연습 문제를 한국어로 번역해야 할뿐만 아니라 “앉아” 또는 “조용히 해”와 같은 명령을 한국어로 번역해야 할 필요가 있습니다.

어떤 식으로 과외 수업을 진행하시나요?

온라인 수업할 때는 항상 학생이 관심이 있는 주제에 관한 PPT를 만들었습니다. 예를 들어 태권도나 주짓수 같은 주제를 선택했습니다. PPT를 만드는것이 학생들이 계속 집중할 수 있게 많이 도와주고 학생에게 책을 읽는 대신에 바로 새로운 단어나 문장을 읽으라고 할 수 있었습니다.  

중학교 갈 때는 보통 다른 강사님들하고 학교 가는 길에 그날에 뭐 할 수 있는지와 무슨 주제에 대해 얘기할지 같이 생각합니다. 수업 시간에 MBTI, 여행하고 싶은 나라, 좋아하는 K-pop 그룹 그리고 주말에 무엇을 했는지 얘기합니다. 

어떤 면에서 이 경험이 가장 보람이 있습니까?

그냥 학생들이 학교에서 수업을 들을 때 이런 기회가 없다 보니까 외국 강사님하고 이런 경험을 해보고 다양한 주제에 대해 얘기도 하는게 너무 좋다고 생각합니다. 학교나 학원에서 영어 수업을 들으면 재미없고 스트레스를 받을 수도 있기 때문에 이러한 편안한 튜터링은 학생들에게 즐거운 경험이 되기를 바랍니다. 

가정교사로서 가장 좋아하는 추억은 무엇입니까?

기억에 떠오르는 특별한 기억이 있는지 모르겠지만, 그냥 학생들이랑 같이 웃으면서 영어도 늘어나고 배운 단어들을 쓰는것이 너무 행복하게 만듭니다. 

PSCORE 튜터링 프로그램에 참여하려는 사람에게 어떤 조언을 하고 싶으신가요?

일단 처음에 학생의 취미나 좋아하는것을 알아보고 그 관심을 중심으로 레슨와 대화를 준비하는것을 추천합니다. 또한 학생이 만약에 무관심해 보이더라도 너무 실망하지 마세요. 학생들은 바쁜 학교 생활 때문에 영어 튜터링이 가장 즐거운 활동은 아닐 수도 있습니다. 그리고 수업 시간에 얼마나 배우는지, 진전이 느린 것 같은지 너무 걱정하지말고요. 제 생각에는 가장 중요한 것은 학생을 영어를 편하게 말하고 언어에 대해 좋은 태도를 가지도록 도와주는 것입니다.
