How did you find out about PSCORE’s volunteering program? What inspired you to start tutoring?

Back home in Canada, I worked as a correctional officer and worked with prison inmates and mentally unstable people. Recently, I came to Korea and had a few surgeries. Since I’m in a different country and am going through the rehabilitation process, I can’t do my old job right now. When I measured my skills in Korea, I realised English was my asset and looked online for teaching positions, regardless of pay. PSCORE’s program really drew my attention because I enjoy working with special or marginalised people in society — not saying my students are outcasts — but rather they do have unique circumstances. So, when I came across the opportunity to work with North Korean kids, I didn’t hesitate to submit my application. 

What does the process of tutoring look like for you?

My main goal is to get them more exposed to English, so I try to do my lessons in English. However, since it’s hard to get the conversation going without incorporating a bit of Korean, I usually mix both languages. I usually use their course material (Subject Line) to formulate about 10-12 multiple-choice questions. That takes around 10-15 minutes. For the remaining portion of the class, I use Kahoot and the girls love it. Also, I often don’t hand out homework because I know these girls have pretty heavy academic loads.

In what way is this experience most rewarding for you?

I would say it’s been a consistently rewarding experience. It feels good to help people and to get to know someone new in the process. It’s been less than a year and my student and I have already become friends. I know her husband, she knows about my life — it’s nice to have established that relationship.

What is your favorite memory as a tutor?

I love watching the girls engage in teamwork as they play games. It’s nice to see them actually communicate and compete with each other while having fun. 

What makes life liveable for you? Something you find important or motivational in life?

motto in life comes from Leonardo da Vinci — “Ostinato Rigore” (Italian for “rigorous persistence”). He’s my favourite historical figure and when I came across this phrase, it stuck with me. My mission in life is to never give up, no matter what I pursue. I just turned 30 last year, and I learned that I don’t know who I will be in the next 5 to 10 years. But as long as I’m honest with myself, try to be as virtuous as I can, and serve others (like doing this PSCORE tutoring program), I think I will be in a good place. 

My main motivation is to consistently fight through setbacks and whatever life throws at you and try to see things with a positive perspective. Try to help other people— I volunteered a lot in Canada, for local police departments & churches for about a decade. No matter how busy or terrible your life can be, you got to give back.

PSCORE의 봉사 프로그램에 대해 어떻게 알게 되었습니까? 과외를 시작하게 된 계기가 있나요?

캐나다에서 저는 교도관으로 일하면서 재소자와 정신적으로 불안정한 사람들과 함께 일했어요. 최근에 저는 수술을 받으러 한국에 왔습니다. 지금은 한국에서 재활 과정을 거치고 있어서 한동안은 예전의 일을 할 수 없습니다. 한국에서 저의 능력을 생각해봤을때 제 강점이 영어인 것을 깨달아서 급여와 상관없이 온라인에서 강사로 일할 기회를 찾았어요. 그러던 중 평소 사회에서 소외당한 사람을 돕는 것을 좋아했던 저는 PSCORE (성통만사)의 프로그램을 접하게 되었고, 지금의 제 학생들처럼 특별한 환경에 놓인 아이들을 돕고 싶었습니다. 그래서 북한 아이들과 함께 일할 수 있는 기회를 발견했을 때, 저는 주저하지 않고 지원서를 제출했습니다.

어떤 식으로 과외 수업을 진행하시나요?

저는 학생들이 영어를 더 익숙해지게 하기 위해 수업을 주로 영어로 하려고 노력해요. 하지만 영어로만 대화하기는 아직 어렵기 때문에, 가끔 한국어랑 영어를 섞어서 수업합니다. 저는 주로 학생들에게 학교 영어 수업 시간에 배운 내용들을 10-12개의 문제로 냅니다. 남은 시간엔 카훗이라는 영어 게임을 해요! 아이들이 너무 좋아해요. 그리고, 저는 한국 학생들이 공부하는 양이 엄청 많은 걸 알기 때문에 숙제를 자주 안 내줘요.

어떤 면에서 이 경험이 가장 보람이 있습니까?

저는 5학년 학생들을 가르치고 있는데, 재미있게도 제가 그 나이였을 때 캐나다로 이민을 갔어요. 이민 갔을 때 영어를 한 마디도 못했고 새로운 언어를 배우는 게 너무 힘들었어요. 그래서 이 학생들의 입장이 어느 정도는 이해가 되고, 학생들이 수업을 열심히 참여하고 즐기는 모습을 보는 게 매우 보람 있어요.

과외하시면서 가장 좋았던 기억은 뭔가요?

학생들이 카홋(Kahoot) 게임할 때 서로 도와주는 모습을 보는 게 제일 좋아요. 그리고 게임할 때 학생들이 서로 얘기하고 재미있게 경쟁하는 걸 볼 수 있습니다.

선생님의 인생에 소중하거나 동기부여가 되는 것은 무엇인가요?

제 삶의 모토는 레오나르도 다빈치의 “Ostinato Rigore”(이탈리아어로 엄격한 지속성이라는 뜻입니다.)에요. 그는 제가 가장 좋아하는 역사적 인물인데, 이 말을 접했을 때 많은 감명을 받았어요. 제 삶의 목표는 제가 추구하는 것을 절대 포기하지 않는 것입니다. 작년까지 30년을 살아오며 제가 느낀 것은 다음 5년, 10년 후에 제가 무엇이 되어 있을지 모른다는 거에요. 하지만 제가 제 스스로에게 정직하고, 제가 베풀수 있는 만큼의 미덕을 베풀고, PSCORE의 튜토링 프로그램처럼 다른 사람들을 돕는다면, 저는 제가 좋은 위치에 있을 수 있다고 생각합니다.

제 삶의 주된 동력은 결점을 극복하기 위해 지속적으로 싸우고, 삶이 당신에게 무엇을 가져다주더라도 그것을 긍정적으로 바라보는 것입니다. 저는 캐나다에 있을 때 지역 경찰서나 교회 등에서 십여년 동안 봉사를 했어요. 이처럼 저와 우리들의 삶이 아무리 바쁘거나 힘들더라도, 다른 사람들을 도와야 한다는 생각을 갖고 있습니다.
