Special relationships are formed between students and teachers through PSCORE.

Gayoung arrived in Seoul in 2011. She decided to escape from North Korea, after suffering though difficult living conditions. These difficulties not only included trying feed herself, but living with labour that was forced upon her. When asked about her impression of Seoul, she said that she found the city to be very complex. “Seoul is filled with a lot of buildings, which is very different to my hometown in the North Hamgyeong Province,” she said.

Gayoung was introduced to PSCORE by her sister. Upon entering the program at PSCORE, Gayoung has been paired up with 2 different teachers. Recently, she was paired with a new teacher, JungEun Park. For the teacher, Gayoung was the first student. By studying with JungEun, Gayoung could successfully enter the University where she had wished to study.

They studied math together, normally meeting up three times per week, but this changed to only once a week when they had busier schedules. After Gayoung applied for college, they reviewed biology, which JungEun happened to be majoring in. Both stated that “it was easy for us to select a meeting place to study together, as PSCORE carefully considered our residences when they paired us up.”

However, they struggled with studying at a café at the first time. The manager of the café scolded them for using a table for a long time. Luckily, they could find another place for study. As a result, Gayoung is currently studying nursing at a University in Seoul.

When asked about a key to the successful outcome, JungEun stated “I have tutored many students in my life, but have never seen such a good student as Gayoung. She was the best student I have ever taught. I was very proud of her, boasting of Gayoung’s acceptance to the University to my friends”. She added that “we are not just in a relationship of a teacher and student because we are very close in age. Rather, we are more like friends.” JungEun is hoping to work with Gayoung as medical personnel someday.

When asked the same question, Gayoung said that “I could successfully enter College because JungEun’s style of teaching fits me. When I was challenged with difficult questions, she went through the whole problem solving process, step by step, with me. She gave me some advice of how to study efficiently as well. This encouraged me to study even harder.”

Gayoung expressed how thankful she is to PSCORE, as its 1:1 tutoring program led her to study what she wanted to study at a College. She exposed her wish of unification too, saying that, “even though I escaped from North Korea, I wish I could visit my hometown someday, if unification happens. That would be very nice for the people currently living in North Korea as well, since they do not have to go through all the hardships any longer.”

PSCORE is very happy to share this story of Gayoung and JungEun. We wish for their friendship to stay strong. PSCORE will also continue supporting and encouraging Gayoung throughout the different steps that she takes to build her life in Seoul.
