How did you find out about PSCORE’s volunteering program? What inspired you to start tutoring?

I came across a prominent North Korean refugee online (Yeonmi Park). Through watching her interviews and podcasts, I got interested in North Korean issues. I heard somewhere that you could volunteer as an English tutor for these refugees, so I looked for a non-profit organization that I could volunteer for. That’s how I found PSCORE and met my student!

What does the process of tutoring look like for you?

I began tutoring in December 2021, so it’s been around nine months with my student. I think we have established a good system by now. Our lessons are mostly conversational; occasionally, I’ll have her read things aloud in English and correct small mistakes. I give her homework assignments every now and then to target other aspects like grammar.

In what way is this experience most rewarding for you?

I would say it’s been a consistently rewarding experience. It feels good to help people and to get to know someone new in the process. It’s been less than a year and my student and I have already become friends. I know her husband, she knows about my life — it’s nice to have established that relationship.

What is your favorite memory as a tutor?

I don’t have a particular memory, but as I mentioned earlier, it’s been a consistently rewarding experience. All the sessions are great, and they’ve accumulated into something meaningful. But it’s especially nice to see when she’s picked up on something we discussed in class. For example, when she uses a word that she learned in tutoring or incorporates a grammatical rule into everyday speaking, it feels good. 

What makes life liveable for you? Something you find important or motivational in life?

There are a lot of things I find inspirational, and I believe finding something meaningful and challenging to go after motivates me day to day. There isn’t one particular thing that makes life worth living for me. Instead, I like to draw inspiration from smaller tasks, whether that be tutoring, writing, exercise, or school.

PSCORE의 봉사 프로그램에 대해 어떻게 알게 되었습니까? 과외를 시작하게 된 계기가 있나요?

인터넷에서 박연미라는 탈북민을 알게 됐어요. 그분의 인터뷰와 팟캐스트를 보면서 북한 문제에 관심을 두기 시작했어요. 어디선가 탈북민들을 위해 영어를 가르칠 수 있다고 들어서, 제가 자원봉사 할 수 있는 비영리단체를 찾기 시작했고, 그렇게 해서 성통만사를 찾았고 제 학생을 만났습니다. 

어떤 식으로 과외 수업을 진행하시나요?

저는 2021년 12월부터 과외를 시작해서, 한 탈북학생과 지금까지 9개월 동안 수업 했어요. 주로 생활영어를 많이 연습하고, 가끔 같이 독서를 하면서 제가 학생의 발음을 고쳐줘요. 때로는 문법, 단어, 독해와 같이 다른 종류에 초점을 둔 숙제를 내줍니다.

어떤 면에서 이 경험이 가장 보람이 있습니까?

저한테는 모든 면에서 보람 있는 경엄이에요. 새로운 사람을 만나고 도울 기회가 있어서 너무 좋아요. 수업 시작한 지 일 년도 안 됐는데 제 학생과 저는 벌써 친해졌어요. 저는 학생의 남편도 만나봤고, 제 학생도 저의 삶의 대해서 많이 알고 있습니다. 수업을 통해서 새로운 친구를 사귀게 돼서 너무기뻐요.

과외하시면서 가장 좋았던 기억은 뭔가요?

만은 의미 있는 순간들이 이 경험을 가치 있게 하죠. 모든 레슨이 다 재미있고, 시간이 지나면서 제 학생과 다양한 추억을 샇으니까, 탈북학생에게 영어를 가르치는게 저한태 매우 의미 있게 됐어요. 그리고 학생이 수업하면서 배운 단어가 문법 규칙을 일상 대화에 적용하는 걸 볼때 특히 기분이 좋아요.

선생님의 인생에 소중하거나 동기부여가 되는 것은 무엇인가요?

저 인생엔 동기부여가 되는 게 맣아요. 저는 매일 의미 있고 도전적인 무언가를 찾으려고 해요. 작은 일을 하면서 하루를 열심히 살고 싶은 마음이 생겨요. 제 삶이 단 한가지만으로 가치있게 되지는 않아요. 저는 과외, 글쓰기, 운동, 학교 수업과 같은 작은 것들을 통해 동기부여를 하고 있어요.
