How did you find out about PSCORE’s volunteering program? What made you start tutoring?

One of the graduation requirements at my university is fulfilling a certain number of hours of community service. When I sought to volunteer last year, I ended up only volunteering to check people’s temperatures due to COVID 19. I didn’t feel my volunteer work was meaningful; in fact, I thought I was volunteering for the sake of filling up my graduation requirement. Building from this experience, I realized that the most meaningful way to give back to the community was by using my major to teach other people, especially children. PSCORE offered me such an opportunity even during the pandemic, so I applied for its volunteering program.

What does the process of tutoring look like for you?

Though I only teach one group of students, I modify my lesson plan based on how many students attend my class. I had ice-breaking conversations with them to check how much or little they knew about computers. I also bought textbooks to cater to the preferences and interests of my students. Often, I change my lessons to meet individual needs. Sometimes, I teach students who want computer science certificates. Sometimes, I give detailed lessons to students interested in text-based coding.

In what way is this experience most rewarding for you?

Even though learning coding has become increasingly popular among younger students, it has a relatively high barrier of entry, especially for elementary school students. So it’s always rewarding when my students say “Oh, I didn’t know this” when I tell them even the most basic facts.

What is your favorite memory as a tutor?

The kids certainly are fascinated and interested in computers, starting from their functions to parts. My favorite memory was when my students thought of new and innovative ways to create something I already had made for them. That’s when I thought I had taught them well.

What makes life liveable for you? Something you find important or motivational in life?

I first started tutoring to make use of my time wisely during the pandemic. As I engaged with my students, I started to feel more connected with them. Their achievements and progress made me proud of them. Even though the pandemic greatly limited my face-to-face interactions with my classmates and other people, tutoring provided an opportunity to interact with others and feel like a college student again.
