Introduce yourself! 자기소개 부탁드립니다!

Hey, my name is Lea and I am from Germany. Currently, I am working as a Research Intern at PSCORE. 

안녕하세요, 제 이름은 레아이고, 독일 출신입니다. 현재 PSCORE에서 연구 인턴으로 일하고 있습니다. 

How did you find out about PSCORE’s tutoring program? And what interested you to volunteer? PSCORE의 튜터링 프로그램을 알게 된 경위는 어떻게 되셨나요? 그리고 왜 자원봉사에 참여하게 되었나요?

I first learned about PSCORE and their work in 2022 while writing my Master's thesis, which focused on North Korean escapees living in South Korea. As part of my research, I contacted several organisations, including PSCORE and continued to follow their work afterwards. Three years after graduating, I applied for an internship with PSCORE due to my ongoing interest in North Korean human rights and reunification. After starting as a Research Intern, I was offered the opportunity to become a tutor.

2022년에 석사 논문을 쓰면서 처음으로 PSCORE이라는 단체와 그들이 하는 활동에 대해 알게 되었습니다. 제 논문은 한국에 거주하는 북한이탈주민들을 주제로 했으며, 연구의 일환으로 여러 단체에 연락했고, 그 중 하나가 PSCORE였습니다. 이후에도 계속해서 PSCORE의 활동을 지켜보다, 졸업 후 3년이 지나고 나서도 북한 인권과 통일에 대한 관심이 계속되어 PSCORE에 인턴으로 지원하게 되었습니다. 연구 인턴으로 일하기 시작한 뒤 튜터로도 일할 기회가 되었습니다. 

Did you teach before? 이전에 영어를 가르쳐 본 경험이 있으신가요?

I have no experience of teaching languages or working with children. However, I have experience conducting workshops and running university classes.

언어를 가르치거나 아이들과 일해본 경험은 없습니다. 하지만 워크숍을 진행하거나 대학 수업을 진행해 본 경험은 있습니다. 

Do you speak Korean? 한국어를 할 수 있나요?

My Korean skills are basic and definitely far from fluent. I usually encourage my students to speak in English as much as possible, only using Korean when necessary. For example, I might use Korean to explain something difficult or to offer comfort when they are struggling.

저의 한국어 실력은 기본 수준이며 유창하지는 않습니다. 저는 학생들이 가능한 한 영어로 말하도록 격려하고, 꼭 필요할 때에만 한국어를 사용합니다. 예를 들어, 어려운 내용을 설명하거나 학생이 힘들어 할 때 한국말로 위로의 말을 건넵니다. 

What does the process of tutoring look like to you? 어떤 식으로 과외 수업을 진행하시나요?

I usually prepare a PowerPoint presentation on a topic that I think my students might find interesting, such as daily activities, hobbies or food. We start each lesson by reviewing the previous week's material to reinforce what was learnt. Then, I introduce the new topic using lots of pictures to make it more engaging and easier to understand. We go over new vocabulary and grammar and I encourage my student to speak and read as much as possible. Afterwards, we do some writing practice and then we finish with a fun game to review the material. I also like to give out sweets at the end as a small reward to maintain motivation.

Other than that, I often talk to other tutors about how their classes went so we can share tips and discuss any challenges, with the aim of improving each time.

저는 보통 학생들이 흥미를 느낄 만 한 주제 (예를 들면 일상 활동, 취미, 음식 등)를 가지고 파워포인트를 준비합니다. 수업은 전 주에 배운 내용을 복습하며 시작하고, 새로운 주제를 사진과 함께 소개합니다. 새로운 단어와 문법을 함께 공부한 후, 학생이 최대한 말하고 읽을 수 있도록 유도합니다. 이후에는 글쓰기 연습을 하고, 마지막에는 재미있는 게임으로 그날 배운 내용을 복습합니다. 수업 끝에는 동기 부여를 위해 사탕같은 작은 선물을 주기도 합니다. 

그 외에도 다른 튜터들과 수업에 대해 자주 대화하며, 팁을 공유하거나 어려움을 논의해 수업을 계속 개선해 나가고자 합니다. 

What would you like to tell someone who wants to participate in our tutoring program? PSCORE 튜터링 프로그램에 참여하려는 사람에게 어떤 조언을 하고 싶으신가요?

Do not hesitate to just give it a try, even if you are not fluent in Korean. It is OK if your students seems a little uninterested sometimes. They may just be tired from school. Try to make the class fun and engaging. Stay motivated and positive and show them that learning English can be enjoyable!

한국어를 유창하게 하지 못하더라도 망설이지 말고 도전해 보세요! 학생이 가끔 관심이 없어 보이더라도 괜찮습니다. 아마 학교 때문에 피곤한 것일 거예요. 수업을 재미있고 흥미롭게 만들기 위해 노력해 보세요. 긍정적이고 의욕적으로 임하면서, 영어 매우는 것이 즐거운 일이라는 것을 보여주세요!
