How did you find out about PSCORE’s volunteering program? What inspired you to start tutoring?

I heard a lot about the North Korean activist Yeonmi Park and watched her videos; she motivated me to try to make a difference in the lives of North Koreans living in South Korea who have a difficult time adjusting to the lifestyle, even though I didn’t know how to speak Korean. Once I saw that there was an opportunity at PSCORE and I just had to send an email to begin, I jumped right on it!

What does the process of tutoring look like for you?

I tutor my class over Zoom from 10~10:45 AM KST. It’s very fun just trying to bond with the student and experimenting with different ways to get interaction going. It’s always great to just see them smile when I bring something up. We do a lot of songs, which I feel are very engaging and memorable. You get them stuck in your head and can memorize them or just have something fun to go along with the lesson. As well as that, I sometimes bring props, such as a pet parrot that I have or stuffed animals. This makes the students laugh and puts a smile on their faces.

In what way is this experience most rewarding for you?

It’s been very rewarding because I genuinely feel that I’m helping make a difference in the lives of some of these students. I feel like they may face difficulties adjusting to life or just in general with the stigmas, and that can be very harmful. It’s nice to just create an inclusive environment where everybody feels welcomed and relaxed and can have fun, even though our class time may be short.

What is your favorite memory as a tutor?

As I mentioned, one day we were learning about animals, and I had my little pet parrot with me. I remember one of the students looked so in awe, and she was looking at her mom and saying, “Look over here, it’s a bird!” Recently I was also using my stuffed animals during class, and one of my students and her little sister were just smiling and laughing the whole time. It was so sweet to see the smiles on their faces.

What makes life liveable for you? Something you find important or motivational in life?

Trying to go out, experience new things, and expand horizons. I’m looking forward to, or planning on, moving to Japan after I graduate college to teach English through an education program. Tutoring at PSCORE is like a stepping stone where I can get a feel of teaching to a foreign audience. It’s out of my comfort zone and not something I expected to be doing as a senior in college, but it’s something that’s very rewarding and what I think is very important in life.

PSCORE의 봉사 프로그램에 대해 어떻게 알게 되었습니까? 과외를 시작하게 된 계기가 있나요?

박연미라는 탈북민에 대해 많이 듣고 연설 영상들도 보았습니다. 비록 저는 한국어를 할 줄도 모르지만, 그녀 덕분에 생활 적응에 어려움을 겪는 남한에 사는 탈북민들의 삶에 변화를 주려 노력하고자 하는 동기를 얻었습니다. 찾아보다가 PSCORE에 이메일만 보내면 봉사를 할 기회가 있다는 것을 안 후, 그 기회를 바로 잡았습니다.

어떤 식으로 과외 수업을 진행하시나요?

저는 오전 10시부터 10시 45분까지 줌을 통해 수업을 진행합니다. 학생들과 친해지고 활발하게 소통하기 위해 다양한 방법을 실험하는 게 매우 즐겁습니다. 제가 말을 할 때 학생들이 웃는 것을 보는 것도 정말 좋아요. 수업 시간에 노래를 공부할 때도 있습니다. 노래로 영어를 배우면 암기하는 것이 더 즐겁고 기억에도 남는 것 같습니다. 또 가끔은 제가 키우는 애완 앵무새나 동물 인형들과 같은 소품을 가져가요. 학생들이 보면서 미소를 짓는 모습이 보기 좋아요.

어떤 면에서 이 경험이 가장 보람이 있습니까?

가장 크게 보람을 느낄 때가 이 학생들 중 일부의 삶에 변화를 주는데 도움을 주고 있다고 느낄 때입니다. 사회의 낙인 때문에 그들이 생활에 적응하는 데 어려움을 겪을 수도 있고, 여러 모로 매우 해로울 수도 있다고 생각합니다. 저희의 수업 시간은 짧을지라도 모두가 환영받고 편안함을 느끼며 즐겁게 지낼 수 있는 포용적인 환경을 만들 수 있는 것이 참 좋은 것 같습니다.

과외하시면서 가장 좋았던 기억은 뭔가요?

전에 언급했듯이, 어느 수업에서는 동물에 대해 배우고 있었고, 제가 키우는 작은 애완 앵무새를 보여줬습니다. 학생 중 한 명이 너무 신기해하며 엄마에게 "이리 와봐, 새야!"라고 말했던 것이 기억나요. 또 최근에는 수업 시간에 소품으로 동물 인형들을 썼는데, 제 학생 중 한 명과 여동생이 수업 내내 웃었습니다. 학생들의 얼굴에 미소를 보는 것이 정말 좋았습니다.

선생님의 인생에 소중하거나 동기부여가 되는 것은 무엇인가요?

나가서 새로운 것을 경험하고 시야를 넓히려고 노력하는 것이요. 저는 대학을 졸업한 후 일본에서 교육 프로그램을 통해 영어를 가르칠 계획이 있습니다. PSCORE에서의 과외 경험은 외국인 학생들에게 가르치는 경험을 할 수 있는 디딤돌과 같다고 느껴집니다. 대학 4학년 때 제가 탈북민 과외를 할 것이라는 기대도 하지도 못했지만, 정말 보람 있고 인생에서 매우 중요한 경험이라고 생각합니다.
